Hydrogen is transforming maritime energy

Dr. Michael Bampaou, PhD, Collaborating Researcher at Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), presented “Hydrogen systems for ship propulsion” during the 2nd Hydrogen Summer ScH2ool which was co-organised by CluBE-Cluster of Bioeconomy and Environment of Western Macedonia and Advent Technologies A/S at the University of Western Macedonia on July 1-5, 2024, where the H2MARINE project was also highlighted.

As the global push for cleaner energy intensifies, the shipping industry must evolve. The main goal of CERTH, is to lead the charge with hydrogen to drive the energy transition forward. Hydrogen stands out as a transformative marine fuel, offering the potential to drastically reduce emissions and enhance energy efficiency in shipping. It’s a versatile solution crucial for meeting the IMO’s 2050 goal to halve CO2 emissions from 2008 levels.

The H2MARINE Project, focuses on developing 250-300 kW PEM fuel cells for marine applications. These cells are designed for scalability and reduced maintenance costs. Hydrogen’s role in integrating renewable energy enhances the sustainability of the shipping value chain.

Hydrogen is opening the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime transportation.
